Seven Workers Perish in Gurgaon Construction Site Wall Collapse
A devastating accident at an under-construction site in Sidhrawali, Gurgaon, resulted in the deaths of seven workers on Monday night. The tragedy unfolded when a wall, part of a sewage treatment plant (STP) project within the Signature Global society, collapsed suddenly, trapping a group of laborers under rubble and soil.
Delayed Response and Rescue Efforts
According to officials, the collapse occurred around 7 PM, but police were not informed until approximately 9:30 PM, leading to concerns about delayed emergency response. In the interim, other workers and passersby initiated rescue efforts by hand, pulling out injured individuals before the arrival of professional teams.
State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), fire brigade, and police personnel eventually took over the operation, working late into the night to clear debris amid fears that more people might be trapped. Rescue teams recovered the bodies of seven workers, while five others were hospitalized for treatment.
Victims and Medical Details
The injured workers were transported to Bhiwadi district hospital in neighbouring Rajasthan, where Dr. Sagar Arora, the hospital in-charge, confirmed that seven were declared dead upon arrival. He indicated that asphyxiation appeared to be the primary cause of death. The bodies reached the hospital between 10 PM and 10:30 PM.
Based on identity cards found, six of the deceased were identified as:
- Indraji Sada (32)
- Bhagirath Gopi
- Chhotelal Sada (37)
- Shiv Shankar (31)
- Shivkant Chaudhary (47)
- Mangatram (32)
Their addresses were listed in Manesar. Police officials noted that the men worked in various roles, including helpers, fitters, and operators.
Investigation and Site Security
Police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the wall collapse. Bhiwadi Superintendent of Police Prashant Kiran stated that Haryana Police have been informed and have assumed control of the probe. Sources revealed that a private contractor was engaged for the STP work.
In a concerning development, after the collapse, bouncers were deployed at the site to restrict access, particularly preventing reporters from entering. An official warned that more deaths could be reported as details from the site are still being collected, highlighting the ongoing nature of this tragedy.
