East Khasi Hills superintendent of police Vivek Syiem stated that the raid was initiated in response to ongoing public grievances regarding the activities of sex workers in these locations. "Sixteen sex workers were picked up and a case under Section 110 of the Meghalaya Police Act has been registered against them," Syiem said in an official statement. This legal provision is often invoked to address public nuisance and maintain order in urban areas.
Supervision and Previous Crackdowns
The operation was overseen by additional SP (traffic) Lovish Garg, the SDPO of Pynursla, B Wanswet, and other senior police officers, ensuring a coordinated effort. This raid follows a similar enforcement action on March 29, when police arrested sixteen individuals under the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act in multiple locations across Shillong. That earlier crackdown was also prompted by citizen complaints about alleged prostitution activities, highlighting a persistent issue in the capital city of Meghalaya.
