Shimla Police Investigate Bangladeshi Student Over Transgender Temple Disguise Allegations
The Shimla Police have initiated a formal investigation following a complaint regarding a private university student from Bangladesh who was allegedly wandering the city's temples while disguised as a transgender individual. This case has drawn attention to issues of identity, religious practices, and public conduct in the hill station.
Complaint Details and Allegations
A local complainant reported that the individual, who identifies as a Bangladeshi Muslim on social media platforms like Instagram, visited the Kalibari Temple and was observed collecting money from people in the Lower Bazaar and Middle Bazaar areas while wearing a saree. The complaint raised concerns about potential deception and unauthorized solicitation in public spaces.
Identification and Background of the Student
Police have identified the man as Islam Mohammad Shahidul, aged 30, who is a journalism student at a private university in Shimla. Originally hailing from Rajshahi in Bangladesh, Shahidul's presence in India is documented through valid travel and academic papers. During police questioning, he provided insights into his personal beliefs and actions.
Student's Defense and Religious Affiliations
Shahidul stated that he belongs to the transgender community and holds deep reverence for Goddess Kali. He admitted to visiting the Kalibari and Jalkhu temples, as well as local markets, particularly during religious events such as Navratri. However, he firmly denied any allegations of forcibly taking money from anyone, asserting that he only accepts voluntary contributions from those who choose to offer them.
Police Verification and Ongoing Investigation
The Shimla Police conducted a thorough verification of Shahidul's documents, including his passport, visa, national identity card, and academic records. All documents were found to be valid and in order, confirming his legal status in the country. Despite this, the investigation remains active to ensure that no laws were violated during his activities.
Key aspects under scrutiny include:
- Whether the collection of money complied with local regulations.
- The authenticity of Shahidul's transgender identity claims.
- Potential impacts on public order and religious sentiments.
Authorities have emphasized that the probe aims to balance individual rights with community safety, ensuring a fair and transparent process. The Shimla Police have not disclosed further details at this stage, but they assure the public that all necessary steps are being taken to resolve the matter appropriately.
This incident highlights broader discussions around gender identity, cultural integration, and legal frameworks in diverse societies. As the investigation progresses, it may set precedents for how similar cases are handled in the future, particularly involving foreign nationals and sensitive religious contexts.
