Mumbai's Siddhivinayak Temple Staffer Arrested for Donation Box Theft

Police in Mumbai have arrested a staff member of the city's famous Siddhivinayak temple for allegedly stealing money from donation boxes, officials confirmed on Sunday.

CCTV Footage Reveals Alleged Theft

The incident came to light on March 20 when temple authorities at the revered Ganesha shrine in Prabhadevi reviewed CCTV footage from the previous 10 days. According to reports from news agency PTI, officials grew suspicious of the worker's activities, which prompted a closer examination of the surveillance recordings.

The CCTV footage allegedly showed the staff member repeatedly removing currency notes from donation boxes placed throughout the temple premises. In one particularly concerning instance, he was captured using his fingers to extract money from a donation box kept inside the priest's private chamber, as detailed in the First Information Report (FIR).

Temple Authorities File Police Complaint

Taking serious note of the alleged misconduct, temple authorities promptly filed a formal complaint at the Dadar police station. The police have since arrested the accused staff member and initiated a thorough investigation into the matter.

Preliminary estimates suggest the worker may have stolen at least Rs 10,000 from the donation boxes. However, investigators are now working to determine several key aspects of the case:

  • Whether the thefts had been occurring over a longer period than initially suspected
  • The total amount of money involved in the alleged thefts
  • Whether any other temple staff members were complicit in the scheme

Ongoing Investigation

Police officials have emphasized that their investigation is ongoing and comprehensive. They are examining all available evidence, including additional CCTV footage and witness statements, to build a complete picture of the alleged thefts.

The Siddhivinayak temple, dedicated to Lord Ganesha, is one of Mumbai's most visited and revered religious sites, attracting thousands of devotees daily who make offerings and donations as part of their worship. This incident has raised concerns about security measures at religious institutions that handle significant amounts of cash donations.

Temple authorities have assured devotees that they are reviewing and strengthening security protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future. The arrest serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in the management of religious donations, which hold both financial and spiritual significance for millions of worshippers.
