Sirsa Police Take Action Against Gas Agency for Alleged Overcharging

The Sirsa police have officially registered a First Information Report (FIR) against a local gas agency following allegations of illegal overcharging. The case centers on Bhupendra gas agency, which is accused of levying home delivery charges on a customer who personally collected an LPG cylinder from the warehouse.

Complaint and Investigation Details

The incident came to light after the district food, civil supplies, and consumer affairs department received a formal complaint on March 31. The complaint detailed excess billing at the agency, prompting a departmental team to conduct an immediate inspection.

During the inspection, officials discovered that an employee of Bhupendra gas agency charged Sukhdev Singh, a resident of Kirarkot village, Rs 943 for a cylinder. This amount reflected the home delivery rate, despite Singh collecting the cylinder directly from the warehouse. The standard warehouse rate is Rs 907, resulting in an overcharge of Rs 36 per cylinder.

Consumer's Experience and Agency Response

When questioned by the officials, the employee failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the discrepancy. The consumer, Sukhdev Singh, left the premises at that time. Two days later, he submitted a written complaint to the department, clarifying that his gas connection is registered with the agency.

In his complaint, Singh alleged that during his visit to the agency to collect the cylinder, he was asked to pay Rs 943. However, upon challenging the charge in the presence of a departmental official, the employee returned the excess Rs 36. This action highlighted the agency's acknowledgment of the overcharging, though it did not prevent legal repercussions.

Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigation

Based on the findings from the inspection and the consumer's complaint, the police have initiated legal proceedings against Bhupendra gas agency. The FIR marks a significant step in addressing consumer rights violations in the region.

Further investigation is currently underway to determine the extent of the overcharging and whether other customers have been similarly affected. Authorities are urging consumers to report any suspicious billing practices to prevent such incidents in the future.

This case underscores the importance of vigilance in consumer affairs and the role of regulatory bodies in protecting citizens from unfair practices. The Sirsa police's prompt action serves as a reminder to businesses to adhere to legal standards and transparent pricing.
