SIT Constituted to Investigate Mysterious Death of Home Guard in Police Quarters

The West Bengal Police have established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the circumstances surrounding the death of a 22-year-old Home Guard, whose body was discovered inside the police quarters of Canning police station. The victim, identified as Guljan Parveen Molla, also known as Reshmi, was found on Sunday, prompting her family to file a formal murder complaint against a Sub-Inspector from the same station.

Details of the Incident and Police Response

The six-member SIT will be led by Rupantar Sengupta, the Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Baruipur. The district police officially announced the formation of the team on Monday, stating that all allegations are being thoroughly examined and that no further comments would be made at this preliminary stage.

According to police sources, the deceased was attached to the Canning Police Station in South 24 Parganas district. A resident of Moukhali area under Jibantala police station, she was living in the Canning police quarters due to her work commitments. Sources indicate that on Friday, she abruptly left her duty and went to the quarters located behind the police station and did not return.

Her family grew concerned after repeated attempts to contact her failed. Following this, they reached out to her workplace. Ruksana Khatun, the victim's sister, went to the quarters and tragically discovered the body. Police from the Canning station subsequently arrived, and the body was sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.

Family's Allegations and Political Background

The family's complaint specifically names Sayan Bhattacharya, a Sub-Inspector (SI) at the Canning police station, alleging his involvement in the incident. This has added a serious dimension to the case, which the SIT is now tasked with unraveling.

The case also has a political undertone. The deceased's father, Rashid Mollah, was a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker who was murdered in Bhangar two years ago during the Panchayat elections. Following his death, his eldest daughter, the victim, was provided with a job as a Home Guard. This background is likely to be a point of scrutiny as the investigation progresses.

The police have emphasized that the investigation is actively underway, with the newly formed SIT taking charge of all aspects of the case. The community and the victim's family await answers as authorities work to piece together the events leading to the young home guard's untimely death.
