Sivaganga Police Engage in Violent Confrontation with Notorious Criminal

In a dramatic incident on Saturday evening, Sivaganga district police shot and apprehended an A+ category history-sheeter after he allegedly launched a violent attack on a police inspector while resisting arrest. The operation, which unfolded near the Kanoor cremation ground, highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in tackling hardened criminals.

Intelligence-Led Operation Turns Violent

Acting on specific intelligence, a specialized police team led by Manamadurai Inspector Kumaravel Pandian, who also holds additional charge of the Thiruppachethi station, successfully traced the accused to an isolated area. The suspect, identified as Oorkavalan of Michaelpatnam, was wanted in connection with three pending non-bailable warrants, making his capture a high priority for authorities.

When police attempted to execute the arrest, Oorkavalan allegedly resorted to aggression, attacking Inspector Kumaravel Pandian in a desperate bid to escape custody. The confrontation escalated rapidly, forcing the officer to take defensive measures.

Warning Shot Ignored Leads to Self-Defense Action

In an effort to de-escalate the situation, Inspector Kumaravel Pandian initially fired a warning shot into the air. However, the suspect continued his assault, disregarding the police directive. Faced with imminent threat, the inspector then opened fire in self-defence, striking Oorkavalan in his right leg and effectively neutralizing the danger.

The injured suspect was quickly overpowered and taken into custody by the police team. He received immediate first aid at the government primary health centre in Thiruppuvanam before being referred to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai for further medical treatment and stabilization.

Extensive Criminal Record Unveiled

Police investigations revealed that Oorkavalan has a staggering 33 criminal cases pending against him, underscoring his status as a significant threat to public safety. His criminal portfolio includes:

  • Three separate murder cases
  • Two attempts to murder charges
  • Multiple cases related to ganja smuggling
  • Assault and illegal possession of weapons

This extensive record categorizes him as an A+ history-sheeter, indicating a high level of criminal activity and danger to society. The successful apprehension marks a critical victory for Sivaganga district police in their ongoing efforts to curb violent crime and ensure community security.

The incident has sparked discussions about police procedures and the use of force in high-risk arrest scenarios. Authorities have emphasized that the shooting was a necessary measure taken in self-defence to protect the lives of officers and prevent the escape of a dangerous individual with a history of violence.
