Six Individuals Arrested in Visakhapatnam Hotel Suicide Case Following Alleged Assault
The Arilova police in Visakhapatnam, commonly known as Vizag, have made significant arrests in a tragic suicide case that has shocked the city. On Thursday, authorities took six persons into custody, including one woman, in connection with the death of 28-year-old Akumarthi Shanthi Kumari. The victim died by suicide in a hotel room at Visalakshi Nagar after reportedly being assaulted by her friends during a party.
Details of the Arrested Individuals and the Incident
The arrested persons have been identified as Putcha Sai Kiran (24), Rampa Laxmi (20), Gopasana Venkata Sai Jeswanth (23), Vasupalli Sai Kumar (24), and Narava Sai Kumar (25). According to police reports, the sequence of events began on Tuesday when Sai Kiran, Sai Kumar, and Jeswanth checked into the B-Square Hotel near Visalakshi Nagar.
Later that day, at around 1 pm, Lakshmi Sanjana, Putcha Sai Kiran, Pudiredla Mani, and the victim, A Shanthi Kumari, joined them in room number 118. The group consumed liquor together, but the atmosphere turned hostile during the party. Shanthi Kumari confronted Lakshmi Sanjana over allegations that Sanjana was spreading rumors linking her romantically with Sai Kiran.
Escalation to Physical Assault and Subsequent Tragedy
When Lakshmi Sanjana denied the accusations, a heated quarrel erupted between the two women. The situation quickly deteriorated, with Sai Kiran, Lakshmi Sanjana, and Jeswanth physically assaulting Shanthi Kumari indiscriminately. The remaining individuals present at the scene verbally abused her, adding to her distress.
Following this altercation, Sai Kumar and B Mani left the hotel premises, while the others moved to room number 119. After some time, Sai Kiran accompanied Shanthi back to room number 118 and then stepped out to fetch water. Overwhelmed by the humiliation and physical abuse inflicted by her friends, Shanthi locked the door from inside and tragically ended her life.
Her friends eventually broke down the door and discovered her hanging from the ceiling fan. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital in the early hours of Wednesday, she was declared brought dead upon arrival.
Police Investigation and Legal Charges
Assistant Commissioner of Police A N Murthy stated that the investigation is ongoing, but the available evidence strongly supports the charges. The entire incident is corroborated by CCTV footage from the hotel premises, which captures the assault, verbal abuse, and humiliation faced by the victim.
Police have emphasized that the actions of Shanthi's friends, including the physical assault and psychological torment, prima facie constitute abetment of suicide under Indian law. The six arrested individuals are currently facing charges related to this offense, and authorities are continuing their probe to uncover any additional details or motives behind the tragic event.
This case highlights serious issues of interpersonal violence and mental distress, underscoring the need for awareness and intervention in such situations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
