Major Snowstorm Disrupts Air Travel Between UAE and United States

A fast-developing Nor'easter has triggered blizzard warnings along the US East Coast, severely disrupting air travel between the United Arab Emirates and the United States. Emirates and Etihad Airways have been forced to cancel and reschedule multiple flights to and from key cities including New York, Newark, and Boston as heavy snowfall and strong winds threaten airport operations.

Severe Weather Conditions Forecast

Meteorologists have issued warnings that this intense storm could dump between one and two feet of snow on major metropolitan areas such as New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington. Blizzard conditions accompanied by gale-force winds are expected to impact the densely populated Interstate 95 corridor, leading to significant travel disruptions.

Snowfall rates exceeding one inch per hour are anticipated in parts of the region. The National Weather Service has cautioned about near-impossible travel conditions and potential power outages. New York City is preparing for what could be its first blizzard since 2016, heightening concerns for residents and travelers alike.

Emirates Flight Cancellations and Adjustments

Emirates has confirmed the cancellation of four specific services due to the adverse weather:

  • EK203 on February 22 from Dubai to New York (JFK)
  • EK204 on February 23 from New York (JFK) to Dubai

In addition to these cancellations, several other Emirates flights have been rescheduled to accommodate the evolving situation:

  • EK202 will now depart New York (JFK) at 6:00 p.m. local time on February 22, arriving in Dubai at 3:25 p.m. on February 23.
  • EK201 is set to leave Dubai at 2:30 p.m. on February 23, with an arrival in New York (JFK) at 7:55 p.m. local time.
  • EK206 will take off from New York (JFK) at 8:00 p.m. local time on February 22, landing in Milan at 9:35 a.m. on February 23.

Emirates has advised passengers affected by cancellations to contact their travel agents for rebooking assistance. Those who booked directly with the airline should reach out to Emirates for support. Travelers on rescheduled services connecting through Dubai will be automatically rebooked to their final destinations.

The airline has urged all passengers to regularly check their flight status and ensure their contact details are updated through the Manage Your Booking service to receive timely notifications. Emirates has apologized for the disruption and stated it is closely monitoring conditions.

Etihad has indicated that further changes may occur depending on weather developments. Affected passengers are being assisted with rebooking or offered refunds upon request. Travelers are advised to monitor flight status updates and keep their contact details current via the airline's website.

Wider Travel Impact and Recommendations

This severe storm is expected to affect multiple airlines operating along the US East Coast. Heavy, wet snow may lead to significant airport delays, flight diversions, and additional cancellations. Authorities have warned residents to prepare for hazardous conditions as the system approaches.

For UAE travelers heading to or from the United States, airlines strongly recommend regular status checks and early communication with booking agents to manage rebooking options as the situation continues to develop.
