Opposition Parties Launch Scathing Attack on Speaker Om Birla Over Alleged Bias

In a heated parliamentary session, opposition parties including the Samajwadi Party (SP), Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), Shiv Sena, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) launched a fierce critique against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. They accused him of displaying blatant bias, with SP MP Anand Bhadauria asserting that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has severely compromised the dignity of the Chair. Bhadauria emphasized that a removal notice against the Speaker has been initiated to protect the integrity of this high constitutional post.

Allegations of Security Concerns and Political Targeting

Congress MP Jothimani and TMC's Sayoni Ghosh strongly condemned the Speaker for what they termed "grave allegations" that Prime Minister Narendra Modi faced threats from women MPs. Ghosh expressed outrage, stating, "you turned us into terrorists," while Jothimani argued that the Speaker's claims were particularly damaging to first-generation politicians from humble backgrounds. She described it as "a grievous attack on every woman who earns a rightful place in public life." Ghosh further urged, "Don't turn this House into the party office of one party," highlighting concerns over parliamentary neutrality.

Criticism of PM Modi's Actions and Foreign Policy

SP's Anand Bhadauria mocked Prime Minister Modi's decisions, noting that he chose to visit Israel amid imminent war but seemed hesitant to attend the Lok Sabha due to the presence of women MPs. Bhadauria questioned who advised Modi to travel to Israel at such a critical juncture, potentially endangering his life. In a striking remark, he "saluted" Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei for resisting U.S. pressure and embracing martyrdom, contrasting this with the BJP's stance. Bhadauria also criticized the denial of opportunities to Rahul Gandhi, describing him not just as the Leader of the Opposition but as the "collective voice of the marginalised sections and the INDIA bloc."

Voices from Regional Parties and Broader Concerns

Charanjit Channi of Congress slammed Speaker Birla for failing to call incarcerated Punjab MP Amritpal Singh to the Lok Sabha even once in two years. He drew a powerful analogy, comparing the suppression of opposition voices to Draupadi's "cheerharan" (disrobing), which he said attacks all norms of dignity and the people's rights. JMM's Vijay Kumar Hansdak lamented that the most frequent word uttered in the House under Birla's tenure is "No" when it comes to opposition requests, indicating a systematic stifling of dissent. IUML MP E T Mohammed Basheer echoed these sentiments, stating that the opposition finds itself in a "very difficult situation" under the current parliamentary leadership.

Context of International Tensions

Amid these domestic political clashes, the backdrop includes escalating international tensions, such as the Israel-Iran conflict. Iran has claimed targeting Israeli military intelligence and naval bases, with reports of fresh explosions in Dubai. The Middle East crisis has drawn condemnation from India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) for attacks on an India-bound Thai ship, deeming the loss of innocent lives in the conflict as "unacceptable." Additionally, Iran has issued warnings to U.S. tech giants like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Nvidia, labeling them as "legitimate targets," further complicating global diplomatic and economic landscapes.

This parliamentary uproar underscores deep-seated frustrations within the opposition regarding perceived unfairness and the erosion of democratic norms in India's legislative processes.
