Violent Clash Erupts in Solapur Village Over Shivaji Statue Installation
A serious communal clash broke out in Anjangaon village, Solapur district, on Wednesday evening following the installation of a statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The incident escalated rapidly, resulting in police intervention, a lathi-charge, and significant property damage.
Statue Installation Sparks Immediate Controversy
Early Wednesday morning, members of one community erected the statue near a local temple. This action immediately triggered a dispute over land ownership. The group that installed the statue claimed it was placed on government-owned land. However, the opposing community asserted that the land belongs to a trust managing the temple of their deity.
By evening, police decided to remove the statue, which sparked a protest. The situation quickly deteriorated into a violent clash. Protesters damaged the official vehicle of the tehsildar, and several police personnel narrowly escaped injury during stone-pelting. Authorities were forced to resort to a lathi-charge to disperse the crowd.
Heavy Police Deployment and Ongoing Tensions
Although police managed to bring the situation under control after some time, heavy bandobast (security arrangements) has been deployed at the location. No formal case has been registered at the police station yet, but tensions remain high.
On Thursday morning, the two groups staged separate protests just meters apart. Throughout the day, Madha's NCP (SP) MLA Abhijeet Patil and Solapur Rural SP Atul Kulkarni held multiple rounds of discussions with both sides in an attempt to mediate.
Land Ownership Verification and Community Demands
Solapur Rural SP Atul Kulkarni announced that authorities will verify the status of the land where the statue was installed. Only after this verification will a decision be made regarding whether to remove or keep the statue.
Revenue authorities spent Thursday examining documents to ascertain land ownership, though the findings have not been made public. The group that erected the statue stated they are willing to shift it only if the administration finds a suitable, centrally-located spot along the state highway passing through the village.
The opposing community remains firm that the statue must be moved elsewhere, arguing that its current location would obstruct their religious processions and rituals. MLA Abhijeet Patil emphasized, "We are going to find out a solution that is acceptable to both sides. It will be amicable to ensure the tensions are eased."
The situation remains delicate as authorities work to resolve this sensitive land dispute and prevent further violence in the community.
