Bareilly Court Hands Down Life Sentence in Patricide Case Over Property Dispute
A local court in Bareilly has delivered a stern verdict, sentencing a 30-year-old man to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his own father. The tragic incident, which occurred in 2025, stemmed from a heated dispute over family land. The convicted man's mother emerged as the primary witness, providing crucial testimony that helped secure the conviction.
Greed Leads to Tragic Family Violence
The horrific event unfolded in the Inayatpur area of Bareilly district's Nawabganj region. On the evening of April 11, 2025, the convict, identified as Chhatrapal, returned home from work while intoxicated. He immediately confronted his father, Lalaram, demanding his share of a 2.5-bigha agricultural plot.
Lalaram, who owned approximately 10 bighas of land total, had consistently refused to partition the property among his four sons. He believed that dividing the land would weaken the family's financial stability and undermine their unity. This refusal triggered a violent outburst from Chhatrapal, who attacked his 65-year-old father with a sickle.
The assault resulted in fatal neck injuries to Lalaram, who tragically succumbed to his wounds while being transported to the hospital. The murder occurred in the presence of Lalaram's wife and other sons, leaving the family traumatized.
Family Testimony and Court Proceedings
During the trial, emotional testimony came from multiple family members. Ram Daee, the 62-year-old widow of the victim, told the court, "He killed my husband. He deserves no mercy." Her words carried significant weight as she had witnessed the entire incident firsthand.
Tarachand, Lalaram's younger son, provided additional context about the family dynamics. "Our father always advocated for family unity," he explained. "He never wanted to divide the land as it would further compromise the family's financial status. But our brother Chhatrapal used to create a ruckus over the issue every now and then."
Assistant District Government Counsel Digambar Patel emphasized the court's perspective on the crime. "The court took a strong view of the offense, where greed for property led a son to murder his own parent," Patel stated. "This represents one of the most severe violations of familial trust and social order."

On Thursday, Additional Sessions Judge Tabrez Ahmed found the accused, Chhatrapal, guilty of murdering his father. The court imposed a life imprisonment sentence along with a substantial fine of Rs 1 lakh.
