Four Injured as Steel Beam Collapses at Pune Holi Party Venue
Four individuals suffered injuries, some with fractures, after a heavy steel lattice beam collapsed during a Holi celebration at a private event venue in Pune's Mundhwa area on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred off North Main Road, casting a shadow over the festive gathering.
Chaos at the Festive Gathering
Senior Inspector Smita Vasnik of the Mundhwa police reported that over 1,000 people, predominantly young adults from various parts of the city, had assembled for the party. The event was held on an open plot, featuring an elevated stage for DJs and dancers, with lattice beams installed at multiple locations near the stage.
"Just a few people were near the steel lattice beam when it collapsed. Some people got trapped under it," Vasnik stated. Two of the injured revellers were transported to Sassoon General Hospital via a police van for urgent medical attention.
Police Investigation into Safety Concerns
Authorities are probing the cause of the collapse, with initial suspicions pointing to structural failures. "We suspect that the lattice beam may have collapsed because of the weight of the lights fixed to it or because workers were still pulling it up. Colourful curtains were hanging from the beam," Vasnik explained.
Despite reports from partygoers suggesting 16-17 injuries, police have confirmed only four cases so far. "We checked with different hospitals and authorities about the figures. Some of them have suffered fractures to legs or hands," she added. Police teams are at hospitals to record statements from the admitted injured individuals.
Legal Actions and Safety Scrutiny
The police had granted sound permission for the event and confirmed that no alcohol was served. However, they plan to register a case against involved parties, including the event organiser and contractors, after completing initial inquiries.
"After recording the statements of the injured, we will register a case against the parties concerned. We will seek expert assistance to examine the safety measures taken at the venue, including the stability of the temporary structure erected for the party," Vasnik emphasized. Attempts to contact the event organiser on Tuesday evening were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls.
This incident highlights critical safety lapses at large-scale events, prompting a thorough investigation to prevent future occurrences and ensure accountability for those responsible.
