In a bizarre sequence of events played out on social media in real time, a 21-year-old BCom student miraculously survived a self-inflicted bullet injury to the head after posting a live video on social media, saying he had no desire to live and was not under any pressure from anyone.
On Thursday evening, the third-year student at Subharti University and resident of Mawana’s Preet Nagar, walked to a canal track and shot himself in the left temple with a country-made pistol. Luckily, the bullet grazed his temple without penetrating the skull.
Moments before the incident, his friends logged on to see the youth brandishing a country-made pistol and delivering a calm, yet devastating, final message. “This is the last time. There is no tension, no pressure and no weakness. I don’t blame my parents, friends, or anyone I loved. I just don’t want to live. Nothing should happen to my family and friends,” the student said in the live video.
For the friends watching, the casual tone of the broadcast only heightened the panic. Recognising the canal track in the background, a group of friends immediately launched a frantic search and rescue mission. “He is a regular on Instagram. The moment we saw him waving a weapon and declaring he would die, we rushed to the spot. We found him there in pain and immediately took him to the police station,” one of his friends said.
He was then admitted to the nearby community health centre (CHC), from where he was referred to a Meerut hospital. Doctors said he was stable and out of danger.
SP (rural) Abhijeet Kumar said, “The matter is being investigated. Efforts are on to locate the weapon used in the case.”
