A sub-inspector attached to the Neykarapatti Taluk police station near Palani was placed under suspension on Saturday for allegedly sexually harassing a woman complainant through inappropriate phone calls and explicit text messages, according to police sources.
Details of the Incident
The officer, identified as Rajagopal, reportedly obtained the woman's contact details when she visited the police station to file a complaint. Subsequently, he began making repeated unsolicited calls to her, which escalated into sending obscene and explicit messages to her mobile phone.
Unable to endure the harassment, the woman informed her parents, who then submitted a formal complaint to Palani Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Dhanajayan.
Inquiry and Action
Following the complaint, the DSP ordered an inquiry into the allegations. As a preliminary measure, Rajagopal was transferred from the Neykarapatti Taluk police station to the Madurai Armed Reserve. Based on the findings of the inquiry, Dindigul Range Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) Sasi Mohan placed the sub-inspector under suspension, police sources confirmed.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about misconduct within law enforcement agencies and the importance of accountability mechanisms to protect complainants from harassment.
