Jaisalmer Suicide Case: Viral Apology Video and Loan Harassment Allegations Surface
In a tragic incident in the Sindhari police station area of Balotra district, Jaisalmer, a man died by suicide on Tuesday, with his family members alleging that harassment by usurers, exacerbated by a viral apology video, drove him to this desperate act. The deceased has been identified as Gautam Jeengar, whose death has sparked outrage and protests in the community.
Details of the Loan and Harassment
According to a report filed by the deceased's brother, Anil Songara, Gautam Jeengar had borrowed Rs 20,000 from individuals identified as Prince Nagoura and his father, Vinod Nagora. Unable to repay the loan on time, Gautam provided his mobile phone, valued at approximately Rs 30,000, as security. Despite this collateral, the creditors allegedly subjected him to continuous harassment and threats, creating immense distress.
Apology Video Recorded at Police Station Goes Viral
The situation escalated when the creditors took Gautam to the Sindhari police station. There, they recorded an apology video of him, which was subsequently shared on social media platforms, going viral and amplifying his humiliation. Police officials stated that after counseling, a consensus was reached between both parties regarding the repayment terms. However, the video, recorded on the police station premises, was still disseminated online, violating the privacy and dignity of the deceased.
Family and Community Response
In the aftermath of Gautam's death, his family and community members staged a dharna outside the hospital mortuary, demanding justice and highlighting the alleged negligence and harassment. The protest underscored the growing concerns over usury practices and the misuse of social media to intimidate borrowers.
Police Action and Detentions
Responding to the report filed by the family, police authorities have detained two accused individuals in connection with the case. The detentions are based on allegations of harassment and the unauthorized sharing of the apology video, which may have contributed to the psychological trauma leading to the suicide.
This incident sheds light on the severe consequences of loan harassment and the ethical implications of recording and sharing sensitive content without consent. It calls for stricter enforcement against usurers and better protection for vulnerable individuals in financial distress.
