Surat Community Meeting Erupts in Violence, Five Individuals Allegedly Assaulted

A 39-year-old land broker and four other individuals were reportedly assaulted during a meeting that was convened specifically to resolve internal disputes within a prominent community group in Surat. According to a formal complaint filed at the Lalgate police station, the incident unfolded during a gathering organized by Abdul Gafar Meman and Faruq Chandiwala, both key figures associated with the Morbi Tankara Meman Samaj.

Background of the Community Dispute

The roots of this violent altercation trace back to a previous community meeting held on January 15 at a hall in Shahpore. That meeting was intended to discuss youth sports activities and community engagement initiatives. During those discussions, Faruq Chandiwala, who serves as the president of the community body, proposed a formal resolution stating that any member found guilty of wrongdoing would face immediate removal from the community. Abdul Gafar Meman, however, strongly opposed this proposal at the time, setting the stage for ongoing tensions.

Police investigations reveal that Meman had earlier resigned from his position as youth president of the community on December 14, 2025. He cited significant differences over policies and the overall functioning of the organization as his primary reasons for stepping down. Following his resignation, Meman began alleging financial irregularities in the use of community donations. He is said to have circulated several videos on social media platforms to raise these concerns publicly, further escalating the conflict.

The Compromise Meeting That Turned Violent

In an earnest effort to ease the mounting tensions and find a peaceful resolution, community leaders arranged a compromise meeting at Sara Park Society in the Lalgate area. According to the detailed police complaint, Abdul Gafar Meman attended this meeting accompanied by approximately 25 community members who supported his stance. On the other side, Faruq Chandiwala arrived with about 10 members backing his position.

During what was supposed to be a constructive dialogue, discussions reportedly turned heated, and an argument broke out between the two factions. The complaint alleges that Chandiwala, in a fit of anger, threw a teacup at Iliyas Meman, a member from the opposing group, and then proceeded to slap him. This aggressive act triggered an immediate and violent scuffle between the two sides, resulting in the alleged assault of the land broker and four other individuals present at the meeting.

Local authorities are currently investigating the incident, examining all available evidence and statements from witnesses. The police have confirmed that the complaint details multiple assaults during the altercation, though no arrests have been made as of yet. Community members have expressed shock and concern over the violence, emphasizing the need for peaceful conflict resolution mechanisms within community organizations.
