Surat Banker's Brother Files FIR Over Instagram Threats to Break Engagement

In a disturbing case of online harassment, the brother of a 26-year-old Surat banker has filed a First Information Report (FIR) with the Jalalpore police in Navsari. The complaint, lodged on Wednesday, details a series of abusive and threatening messages received via Instagram, demanding that the banker break off his engagement with his fiancée.

Threats and Demands on Social Media

The complainant reported that the accused, using an unknown Instagram account, sent messages claiming to have been in a relationship with the fiancée for the past five years. The messages explicitly instructed the complainant to tell his brother to end the engagement, with the accused threatening to disrupt the wedding by showing pictures of himself with the woman to guests.

According to the FIR, the incident began on November 11, 2025, when the complainant was at his home in Navsari. He received messages from an account bearing the name of his brother's fiancée, where the person identified himself as her boyfriend and insisted on the engagement being called off.

Escalation of Harassment

The harassment intensified over time. On November 26, the accused changed the Instagram ID and sent another message, warning that he would inform all relatives about the alleged relationship. By December 9, the contact resumed, with the accused making further threats and revealing that he had left his wife and children for the woman, only to be abandoned later, vowing not to spare her.

The accused's persistent messages included claims of a long-term involvement and dire consequences if the engagement proceeded, creating significant distress for the complainant and his family.

Police Investigation Initiated

As the threats continued unabated, the complainant reached out to the cyber crime helpline on December 10 and filed a formal complaint. Based on this, the Jalalpore police registered an FIR on Wednesday, with Police Inspector D D Ladumore leading the investigation into the matter.

This case highlights the growing concerns over cyber harassment and the misuse of social media platforms for personal vendettas, underscoring the need for vigilance and prompt legal action in such scenarios.
