Surat Man Arrested for Alleged Deception Involving Marriage, Job Promises, and IVF Treatment

In a shocking case from Surat, the Chowk Bazar police have arrested a 27-year-old man for allegedly establishing a physical relationship with a 35-year-old woman by luring her with false promises of marriage and a permanent job at the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC). The accused, who worked as a supervisor at SMC, is also accused of making the woman undergo IVF treatment after she failed to conceive naturally, leading to significant financial losses for her.

Details of the Alleged Deception and Relationship

According to police reports, the woman, currently employed as a diamond worker, had previously been married and obtained a mutual divorce after two years. In 2023, while working as a cleanliness worker with the SMC, she came into contact with the accused, who was her supervisor. Their frequent meetings eventually led to a relationship, with the accused proposing marriage despite the woman's initial hesitation due to her divorced status.

The accused allegedly gained her trust by assuring her of a permanent job at SMC, claiming it would help them build a stable future and even a "dream house" after marriage. He then started taking money from her, stating it was required for securing the permanent job. As their relationship progressed, he had physical relations with her multiple times, repeatedly promising marriage but avoiding the topic with excuses whenever she raised it.

Escalation to IVF Treatment and Financial Exploitation

The complaint further reveals that the accused told the woman his family was opposing the marriage and even suggested suicide as an option. He allegedly convinced her that having a child would compel his family to accept her as his wife. When she failed to conceive naturally, he made her undergo IVF treatment for nearly a year at a private hospital in Surat.

During this period, the woman was forced to sell her gold and silver ornaments, with approximately Rs 4 lakh spent on the treatment. However, after the IVF attempts failed, the accused allegedly revealed that he was already married and could not marry her, leaving her devastated and financially drained.

Police Investigation and Legal Action

The case came to light last month when the woman contacted the 181 helpline after discovering the truth. Helpline staff visited the accused's residence in the Mora Bhagal area and confirmed he was married. Realizing she had been deceived, she filed a formal complaint with the Chowk Bazar police.

An officer stated, "The accused believed that if the victim gave birth to a child, his family would accept her as his wife. However, his plan failed. We are investigating whether there was any other motive behind his insistence on having a child." The accused has been arrested under Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with sexual intercourse through deceitful means or a false promise to marry. Police noted that the accused also has a three-month-old child from his marriage, adding complexity to the case.

This incident highlights the vulnerabilities faced by individuals in relationships based on deceit and the severe emotional and financial toll such exploitation can take. Authorities are continuing their investigation to uncover any further details or motives in this distressing case.
