Surat Police Launch Major Crackdown on Textile Fraudsters
In a decisive move to combat rising textile fraud cases, the Surat police have launched a comprehensive crackdown, registering 16 First Information Reports (FIRs) across various police stations in the city. This action follows a high-level meeting between senior police officials and textile traders, chaired by Additional Commissioner of Police Balram Meena, aimed at addressing the escalating cheating incidents in the textile sector.
Police Dialogue with Traders Leads to Swift Action
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 2) Kanan Desai provided detailed insights into the operation. "We held a dialogue with textile traders to address the rising cheating cases," Desai told TOI. "Based on their inputs, we promptly registered 16 FIRs involving fraud amounts ranging from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 2 crore. Around 50 complaints are currently under investigation, and more FIRs are likely to be filed in the coming days." This proactive approach underscores the police's commitment to tackling financial crimes in one of India's key textile hubs.
Multi-State Manhunt for Accused Individuals
To ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice, police teams have been dispatched to several states, including:
- Rajasthan
- Maharashtra
- Haryana
- Delhi-Gurgaon
- West Bengal
DCP Desai emphasized the broader intent of this drive, stating, "This drive is meant to send a strong message to fraudsters operating from different states." The cross-state operations highlight the interconnected nature of these fraud schemes and the police's determination to curb them.
Stricter Legal Measures Under Consideration
In a bid to deter habitual offenders, the police are preparing to invoke provisions of the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act (PASA). This legal step is expected to ensure stricter action against repeat culprits, potentially leading to more severe penalties and preventive detention. Desai added that this measure aims to enhance the legal framework for dealing with such economic crimes.
Focus on Key Textile Areas and Preventive Guidelines
The crackdown has targeted police stations in areas with dense textile markets and units, including:
- Salabatpura
- Udhna
- Saroli
- Godadara
- Varachha
- Laskana
- Katargam
Additionally, the police have shared precautionary guidelines with over 200 textile trade leaders to help prevent future frauds. This educational initiative is part of a broader strategy to empower the business community with knowledge and tools to safeguard against scams.
The Surat police's multi-pronged approach—combining immediate FIR registrations, interstate investigations, legal enhancements, and community engagement—signals a robust response to protect the integrity of the textile industry and restore trader confidence.
