Surat Police Crack Down on Habitual Offenders Under PASA to Secure Local Elections

In a decisive move to uphold public safety and ensure the smooth conduct of upcoming local self-government elections, Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gahlaut has initiated stringent action under the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act (PASA). This proactive measure targets habitual offenders who pose a threat to law and order, aiming to prevent untoward incidents and maintain a peaceful electoral environment in the city.

31 Offenders Detained and Transferred to Jails Across Gujarat

Over the past eight days, police authorities have detained a total of 31 individuals under PASA provisions. These offenders have been subsequently transferred to various jails located in Ahmedabad, Bhuj, Rajkot, and Mehsana. The detained persons are allegedly involved in a wide range of criminal activities, including sexual harassment, cyberfraud, physical assault, vehicle theft, house burglary, mobile snatching, and prohibition-related offenses.

Among those apprehended, ten are specifically accused in cases of assault. Notable individuals include Sadik Shaikh and Meetsinh Padhiyar, both of whom have prior records for attempted murder in the Salabatpura and Varachha police station areas, respectively.

Similarly, Deepak Mali, facing charges of molestation and sexual harassment against women in Surat, has been transferred to the Special Jail in Bhuj. Ankit Thakor, identified as a loan shark who imposed exorbitant interest rates and threatened victims with a knife even after loan repayment, has been dispatched to Rajkot jail.

Official Statement Emphasizes Zero Tolerance During Elections

An official spokesperson for the Surat Police emphasized the department's unwavering commitment to maintaining public order. "Strict action under PASA will be taken against persons who may obstruct the maintenance of law and order during the upcoming elections," the official stated. This declaration underscores the police force's resolve to employ all legal measures to safeguard the electoral process and ensure citizen security.

Annual Statistics Reveal Extensive Use of PASA

This recent crackdown is part of a broader enforcement strategy. So far this year, Surat Police have detained a total of 257 accused individuals under the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act. This statistic highlights the ongoing efforts to combat anti-social elements and reinforce a secure atmosphere in the region, particularly in anticipation of significant public events like elections.
