Surat Construction Worker Arrested for Alleged Rape of 8-Year-Old Girl
In a distressing incident in Surat, the Katargam police have taken swift action by arresting a 27-year-old construction worker for allegedly raping an eight-year-old girl at a government school construction site. The arrest was made on Friday, following a complaint filed by the victim's father, who reported the crime after discovering the assault upon returning from a shopping trip.
Details of the Alleged Crime
The alleged rape occurred on Wednesday noon, taking advantage of the girl's parents' absence. According to police reports, the girl's father had gone to the Amroli market to buy clothes, leaving his children under the care of a relative. The accused, identified as Ali Anjar Alam, is a native of West Bengal who came to Surat as a contract laborer. He has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, highlighting the severity of the charges.
Family Background and Incident Unfolding
The victim's family, also from West Bengal, lived in makeshift dwellings at the construction site with his wife, two sons aged 13 and 11, and two daughters aged 8 and 6. On the day of the incident, being a holiday, the father took his wife and younger daughter shopping, entrusting the care of the remaining three children to a relative. Upon returning around 6:30 PM, the accused complained to the father about the younger son's mischievous behavior, but the son denied any wrongdoing and instead revealed that Alam had raped his sister.
When confronted, the girl confirmed the sexual assault to her father. Women working at the site immediately checked the girl and noticed internal injuries, prompting her to be rushed to a hospital for medical attention. The father then approached the police, leading to Alam's arrest. Both the victim and the accused are migrants from West Bengal, working as contract laborers in Surat, underscoring the vulnerabilities faced by such communities.
Police Response and Legal Actions
The Katargam police have acted promptly in this case, emphasizing their commitment to child safety and justice under the POCSO Act. The arrest underscores the ongoing challenges in protecting children in transient labor environments and the critical role of community vigilance. Authorities are continuing their investigation to ensure all legal procedures are followed, with the case serving as a stark reminder of the need for enhanced security measures at construction sites and other vulnerable areas.
