Swami Avimukteshwaranand Declines Basant Panchami Dip Amid Safety Concerns in Prayagraj
In a significant development from Prayagraj, Jagadguru Swami Avimukteshwaranand announced on Thursday that he will abstain from taking the traditional holy dip in the Sangam during the upcoming Basant Panchami festival. This decision stems from deep-seated apprehensions regarding the safety and treatment of his followers and disciples by local authorities.
Safety Fears Prompt Decision to Skip Ritual
Swami Avimukteshwaranand expressed his reluctance, stating, "How can we take a bath on Basant Panchami? If we go to take a dip, our followers and disciples will be arrested and beaten again. They will humiliate us." He emphasized that his participation in the ritual is contingent upon receiving a firm assurance from the state government. Specifically, he highlighted that progress can only occur "when Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath gives an assurance that no harm will come to us, and a competent officer comes and escorts us to Sangam."
Allegations of Inaction and Harassment by Authorities
The spiritual leader further alleged that no disciplinary measures have been taken against officers who previously assaulted his followers. "Instead, they are encouraged. As a result, they are issuing notice after notice, tarnishing our image," he claimed. Swami Avimukteshwaranand disclosed that his organization has received two official notices and has duly responded to both. Notably, the second notice mentioned the withdrawal of certain facilities, adding to the tensions.
This situation underscores ongoing friction between religious groups and administrative bodies in Prayagraj, particularly around major festivals. The Basant Panchami dip, a revered tradition for many devotees, is now mired in controversy, with Swami Avimukteshwaranand's stance highlighting broader issues of security and religious freedom in the region.
