A Swiss citizen was detained at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi on Saturday after Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel discovered a satellite phone in his possession during a routine security check. The incident highlights the strict enforcement of India's regulations on prohibited communication devices.
Details of the Airport Interception
Andre Cyril Neuvenschwander, a 34-year-old engineer from Lucerne, Switzerland, was stopped in the airport's holding area. CISF officials, acting on standard security protocols, identified the satellite phone, which is banned for civilian use in India without proper authorization. The device was immediately seized, and Andre was handed over to the Phulpur police station for further investigation.
Multiple agencies, including local police and security forces, conducted a thorough probe into the matter. During questioning, Andre claimed he was unaware that satellite phones are prohibited in India, stating he had brought it for personal use during his travels. He presented a valid visa and cooperated fully with authorities.
Investigation and Release
After extensive interrogation and background checks, investigators found no evidence of suspicious activity or malicious intent linked to the satellite phone. Andre was subsequently released with a written apology, acknowledging his lack of awareness about the ban. He was permitted to continue his journey with his girlfriend, boarding a flight to Mumbai as originally planned.

An investigation revealed that Andre had resigned from his engineering job in September 2025 to embark on a world tour. He entered India on January 29 via Delhi and had previously visited tourist destinations in Rajasthan and Agra. In Varanasi, he stayed near Assi Ghat and explored local attractions such as Sarnath, Kashi Vishwanath Dham, and Ramnagar Fort before the airport incident.
