A teacher and her son sustained serious injuries after a speeding car collided with their scooter in Chandigarh on Tuesday evening. The incident occurred near the Sector 26-27 crossing when a car, reportedly driven by a youth, hit the two-wheeler from behind, causing the victims to be thrown off the vehicle.
Details of the Accident
The teacher, identified as Rekha Sharma, a resident of Sector 21, was returning home with her son after purchasing groceries. The car driver, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, fled the scene after the crash. Passersby rushed the injured to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, where both are undergoing treatment. Rekha has suffered a fractured leg and multiple bruises, while her son has a head injury and is in the intensive care unit.
Police Investigation Underway
The Chandigarh Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for rash driving and causing hurt. A search is on for the accused driver, who has been identified through CCTV footage. Police officials said they are examining the footage to track the vehicle's movements before and after the accident.
In a separate incident, a pedestrian was injured when a bike hit him near the Sector 17 market. The biker also fled the scene. Police have urged witnesses to come forward with any information regarding these incidents.

Local residents have expressed concern over the increasing number of road accidents in the city, particularly those involving hit-and-run drivers. They have demanded stricter enforcement of traffic rules and installation of more speed breakers and traffic cameras at accident-prone intersections.
