Hyderabad Teacher's Tragic Suicide Sparks Harassment Case Against Husband and In-Laws
In a distressing incident in Kothagudem town, Hyderabad, a 37-year-old government teacher died by suicide at her residence late on Sunday, with allegations pointing to harassment by her husband and his family members. The deceased has been identified as Bhukya Kavitha, who served as a teacher at Zilla Parishad High School (ZPHS) in Bhadrachalam.
Details of the Incident and Family Background
Kavitha was married to Maloth Nageshwar Rao, also a teacher at the Government High School in Burgampahad, since 2014. The couple had two children together. According to police reports, on Sunday evening, Kavitha and Nageshwar Rao engaged in a heated argument over family matters. Following the altercation, Kavitha retreated to the bedroom and did not emerge for several hours.
At approximately 9 pm, Nageshwar Rao attempted to open the bedroom door but found it latched from the inside. Peering through a window, he discovered Kavitha hanging from the ceiling fan. Kothagudem I Town Sub-Inspector G Vijaya stated that neither Nageshwar Rao nor the children had checked on her during this period, leading to the tragic discovery.
Allegations and Police Action
Police were immediately alerted, and Kavitha's body was shifted for an autopsy. In a formal complaint, Kavitha's mother, Bhukya Hachi, accused Nageshwar Rao of physically assaulting her daughter during the argument. Hachi further alleged that persistent harassment from Nageshwar Rao, his parents, and other family members drove Kavitha to take her own life.
Based on this complaint, the Kothagudem I Town police registered a case on Monday under Sections 85 (husband or relative of husband subjecting a married woman to cruelty) and 108 (Abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The accused include Nageshwar Rao; his parents, Maloth Laxmi and Maloth Jagan; his brother, Maloth Ramakrishna; sister-in-law Maloth Usha; and niece Rohini. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the case.
