Telangana Drug Bust Uncovers International Network with Poland Links
In a significant breakthrough, an inter-state drug racket busted in Telangana has revealed a far-reaching network that extends beyond India's borders. The investigation into the illegal manufacture of mephedrone, commonly known as 'meow meow', has uncovered that a suspect connected to the case allegedly shipped key precursor chemicals to Poland. This discovery prompted the Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement (EAGLE) force to alert foreign authorities, marking a critical development in the fight against transnational drug trafficking.
Seizure and Investigation Details
The probe originated from an illegal manufacturing unit in Shadnagar, located on the outskirts of Hyderabad, where authorities seized 17 kg of the banned drug. The information regarding the international shipment was conveyed to Poland through the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), India's nodal agency for coordinating drug-related matters internationally. According to officials, the suspect transported the precursor chemical 2 Bromo-4 methylpropiophenone to Poland in July 2025.
The investigating team, comprising sleuths from EAGLE, the Drug Control Authority (DCA), and other agencies, busted the racket earlier this month. An EAGLE officer stated, "Presently, 2 Bromo-4 methylpropiophenone has no significant industrial demand. Along with this chemical, the suspect also shipped 2 Bromo+3 chloropropiophenone in the same consignment to Poland. Based on our investigation, we alerted the European authorities about the potential risk."
Chemical Precursors and Regulatory Actions
Experts highlighted that the precursor 2 Bromo+3 chloropropiophenone, when subjected to chemical reactions, can lead to the formation of clophedrone, another designer drug. These chemicals are largely prone to misuse in the illegal drug trade, with limited legitimate use in manufacturing a specific antidepressant. In response to proposals from various enforcement agencies, the Union government brought 2 Bromo-4 methylpropiophenone under the list of regulated precursors starting March 11. Prior to this regulation, such unregulated consignments often ended up in the hands of illegal drug manufacturers who produced mephedrone and supplied it to peddlers.
Arrests and Further Revelations
Investigators tracking buyers of these precursors received a tip-off about 15 days ago regarding the illegal manufacture of mephedrone at a house in Shadnagar. The drug was allegedly being transported to Rajasthan in two vehicles. Acting on an alert from EAGLE, Rajasthan police intercepted the vehicles and arrested two individuals, Veerender Swamy and Manish Bishnoi, seizing 17 kg of mephedrone. Two other accused remain absconding with the remaining consignment.
Further investigation revealed the involvement of Manoj Kumar, a resident of Agra in Uttar Pradesh, who allegedly provided technical assistance to the arrested accused in manufacturing synthetic drugs using the supplied precursors. Officials noted that the probe also indicated those supplying the precursor chemicals to the drug racket played a role in sending the consignment to Poland, underscoring the international dimensions of this criminal network.
