Telangana Governor Approves Remission for 92 Life Convicts

Hyderabad: Officials of the prison department on Wednesday confirmed that Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla has granted permission for remission to 92 convicts serving life imprisonment. A source within the prison department revealed that, following an internal scrutiny process, 103 life convicts were initially identified by jail superintendents. Their names were subsequently forwarded to the state government for further action.

Vetting and Approval Process

The state government sent the list to intelligence agencies for thorough vetting. After this verification, a high-level committee, led by the chief secretary, selected 92 prisoners based on the intelligence reports. The proposal was then presented before the state cabinet and later forwarded to the governor for final approval.

Demographics of the Convicts

Among the 92 life convicts, 86 are men and six are women. Nearly all were convicted in murder cases. Prison officials stated that the confidential list of the 92 prisoners, along with their release dates, will be announced after Director General (Prisons) Sowmya Mishra and other senior officials hold discussions with Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy. All selected convicts have completed at least 15 years of imprisonment.
