Telangana HC Concerned Over Delay in Journalists' Accreditation Renewal
Telangana HC Concerned Over Delay in Journalists' Accreditation

The Telangana High Court on Thursday voiced serious concern over the prolonged delay in renewing and extending working journalists' accreditation cards issued by the Information and Public Relations (I&PR) Department. The court made these observations while hearing petitions filed by journalist associations, which had earlier approached the High Court seeking timely renewal.

During the proceedings, the petitioners informed the court that the renewal process remained pending despite repeated assurances from the state government. The matter was previously heard on May 14, when the petitioners highlighted that accredited journalists across Telangana were facing significant difficulties due to the non-renewal of their cards. These delays have impacted their ability to perform professional duties, access official events, and claim benefits associated with accreditation.

In Thursday's hearing, the state counsel informed the court that the validity of media accreditation cards would be extended until June 16, 2026, and that formal extension orders would be issued shortly. The counsel further stated that a list of journalists requiring extension had been requested from the petitioners. However, the court observed that the issue concerned the entire journalist fraternity, not just the petitioners, and deemed it inappropriate to seek a list solely from them. The court emphasized that the extension should be applied uniformly to all eligible journalists.

The court also noted an earlier undertaking given before a division bench that the extension would be completed by May 31, 2026, which was later extended to June 16, 2026. Directing the authorities to strictly adhere to the undertaking and its directions, the court ordered the extension of cards in accordance with the commitment made. The matter has been adjourned to June 16 for further hearing, allowing time for compliance.

The delay in renewing accreditation cards has been a persistent issue for journalists in Telangana, affecting their professional activities and access to government facilities. The court's intervention underscores the importance of timely administrative action to support the media's role in democratic processes.
