A court in Thane has acquitted eight men who were charged with the attempted murder of a police constable, delivering a significant verdict that highlights critical flaws in the prosecution's case. The judgment, pronounced by Additional Sessions Judge V L Bhosale on April 6, granted the benefit of doubt to the accused, emphasizing that the prosecution failed to prove its allegations beyond reasonable doubt.

The court's decision was primarily based on two major factors: the victim's inability to identify his attackers and the hostile stance of key prosecution witnesses. According to the prosecution, Constable Bhaskar Sonavane was brutally assaulted with sticks and beer bottles outside a bar in Thane's Upvan area on April 21, 2016. However, the court noted that Sonavane himself could not identify any of the accused as the assailants. This failure was attributed to the incident occurring at nighttime and the constable losing consciousness after being struck on the head, which resulted in a skull fracture and brain injuries.
Furthermore, the court observed that crucial witnesses, including hotel partner Rajesh Shetty and manager Naveen Gouda—who was the original complainant—turned hostile during the trial. Their testimony did not support the prosecution's narrative, severely undermining the case against the accused.

The attack on Constable Sonavane stemmed from a dispute between the hotel management and a customer named Kamlesh. According to reports, Kamlesh's brother, Arun, led a group of 10 to 15 persons to the site, leading to the violent altercation. Sonavane, who was at the location to meet an informant, became an unintended victim of this conflict, suffering severe injuries that required extensive medical treatment.
In her judgment, Judge Bhosale meticulously reviewed the evidence, concluding that the prosecution had not met the legal standard of proof required for a conviction.
