Thane Police Arrest 20-Year-Old with Illegal Firearms in Major Operation

In a significant crackdown on illegal weapons, the Anti-Narcotics Cell of the Thane City Crime Branch has arrested a 20-year-old man and seized four country-made pistols along with live ammunition valued at over Rs 4 lakh. The arrest occurred near Bhiwandi, marking a crucial development in the police commissioner's special drive against unlawful possession of arms.

Operation Details and Arrest

Acting on a specific tip-off provided by police hawaldar Amol Desai, a dedicated team intercepted the suspect, identified as Sohil Beg Shorab Beg Mirza, a resident of Alampur in Bhind district, Madhya Pradesh. The interception took place near Dev Chowk on Dombivli Bypass Road on February 2. This operation underscores the proactive measures being taken by law enforcement to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms in the region.

Legal Proceedings and Investigation

A case has been formally registered at the Narpoli Police Station under relevant sections of the Arms Act and the Maharashtra Police Act. Following his arrest, the accused was produced before a court, which remanded him to police custody until February 9. This legal step allows investigators to delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the possession and potential distribution of the seized weapons.

Ongoing Probe into Supply Chain

Investigators are now intensively probing the supply chain to identify the source of the firearms and any potential buyers. A senior crime branch official emphasized the importance of this breakthrough, stating, "This is a significant breakthrough in our ongoing campaign against illegal arms." The official added, "We are investigating whether this is part of a larger network supplying illegal weapons in the region." This inquiry aims to dismantle any organized networks involved in the illegal arms trade, enhancing public safety and law enforcement efforts.

The seizure and arrest highlight the Thane police's commitment to combating crime and ensuring community security through targeted operations and rigorous investigations.
