Three Arrested in Khargone for Alleged Lawrence Gang Extortion Plot
In a significant development, Khargone police have apprehended three individuals in connection with an alleged extortion scheme targeting a prominent bio cotton businessman in Bheelgaon. The accused are suspected of issuing threats under the notorious name of the Lawrence gang, a criminal syndicate with a history of such activities.
Court Grants Police Remand as Investigation Intensifies
Police officials confirmed that the three arrested persons were produced before a local court, which subsequently granted a three-day police remand. This remand period will allow investigators to conduct thorough interrogations and gather further evidence in the ongoing case. The identities of the accused have been withheld temporarily due to the sensitive nature of the investigation, as disclosed by authorities.
Special Investigation Team Formed Amid Widespread Cases
Khargone Superintendent of Police Ravindra Verma revealed that a detailed investigation is currently in progress, with a Special Investigation Team (SIT) being constituted at the state level. This decision comes in response to similar extortion cases being reported across five different districts, indicating a potentially broader criminal network. SP Verma assured that police will soon disclose comprehensive details of the case as the probe advances.
Businessman Alleges Political Protection for Mastermind
Cotton businessman Dilip Rathore, along with members of the Rajput community, submitted a formal memorandum at the Kasrawad police station on Saturday. In their submission, they claimed that an influential person from the region is the prime conspirator behind the entire extortion plot. Rathore provided police with specific names and details, alleging that this individual masterminded the conspiracy and had previously attempted to have him kidnapped through the Lawrence Bishnoi gang two years ago.
"I have submitted concrete evidence linking this person to the accused currently in police custody," Rathore stated emphatically. "He has been absconding for the past four years and is enjoying political protection, which has allowed him to evade justice."
Police Advise Discretion as Tensions Rise
According to Rathore, police authorities have advised him against publicly disclosing the alleged mastermind's name while the investigation remains active. However, the businessman has issued a stern warning, declaring that he will organize a public protest, potentially including a road blockade, if decisive action is not taken against the conspirator. This development highlights the growing tension between local business communities and alleged criminal elements operating under political shields.
The formation of the SIT and the arrests mark a crucial step in addressing organized extortion rackets in the region, with authorities now focusing on uncovering the full extent of the criminal network and its possible political connections.
