Three People Die in Virudhunagar Van Crash on Highway
A tragic accident on the Sattur–Virudhunagar four-lane highway claimed three lives on Monday afternoon. Police sources confirm that a cargo van carrying eleven people met with a devastating crash near RR Nagar.
Details of the Virudhunagar Incident
The group was traveling from Tirunelveli to Pollachi after completing catering work. Members hailed from Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, and Pollachi. At around 3:30 PM, the van began climbing an overbridge. The driver suddenly lost control of the vehicle.
The van rammed forcefully into the parapet wall of the bridge. The impact of the collision proved severe. Several passengers were thrown from the van onto the service road below. They fell from a height of nearly five feet.
Two individuals, Namakani and Kalaiyarasi, died instantly at the scene. Emergency services rushed the remaining eight injured people to Virudhunagar Government Medical College Hospital. Among them was an eight-year-old boy. Sadly, one more victim, Ramamoorthy, succumbed to injuries later in the evening.
Two women sustained particularly severe injuries in the crash. Authorities identified them as Kavitha, aged 45, and Abinaya, aged 20. Rescue teams transferred both women to Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai district for advanced treatment. Vachakarapatti police have registered a case and are actively investigating the cause of the accident.
Separate Fatal Accident on Kodaikanal Ghat Road
In a separate and unrelated incident, another life was lost on the treacherous Kodaikanal–Palani ghat road in Dindigul district. This accident also occurred on Monday.
Couple's Holiday Ends in Tragedy
A couple from Erode, Poongunran, 48, and Thulasimani, 39, were returning home after a Pongal holiday in Kodaikanal. Their journey took a fatal turn near Savarikkadu on the ghat road at approximately 4:00 PM.
Poongunran lost control of the car while navigating the road. The vehicle plunged into a deep gorge estimated to be about one hundred feet deep. Thulasimani died on the spot from the horrific fall.
Fire and rescue service personnel arrived at the scene. They managed to rescue Poongunran from the wreckage. Rescuers rushed him to Palani Government Hospital for urgent medical care. Palani police have registered a case, and an investigation into this accident is currently underway.
Bus Catches Fire at Dindigul Bus Stand
Adding to the day's events in the region, a stationary government bus caught fire at the Dindigul bus stand. This incident happened around the same time as the Virudhunagar crash, at about 3:30 PM.
Alert passengers onboard the bus noticed smoke emanating from the vehicle. They quickly and safely disembarked. People in the immediate area acted swiftly. They used water to douse the flames before the fire could spread significantly.
Fortunately, this incident did not result in any injuries. Police are conducting inquiries to determine the origin of the fire. The quick public response prevented what could have been a more serious situation.
These three separate incidents across Virudhunagar and Dindigul districts have cast a shadow, highlighting road safety concerns in Tamil Nadu.
