BARPETA: The Assam Police have apprehended three juvenile boys for the alleged gang-rape and murder of a 10-year-old girl in the Barpeta district, a law enforcement official stated on Tuesday.
According to Barpeta Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Sameeran Baishya, the girl was returning home early from school because she was feeling unwell. As she walked home, she was ambushed by the attackers.
"On the way, the accused dragged her into a jute field and gangraped her. Then they strangled her to death at the spot and left the body in the field," he said.
When the girl did not return home till evening, the family informed police and the body was recovered from the field by a police team later in the night, PTI reported.
Following preliminary inquiries, the police successfully tracked down and caught the three minor suspects.
"The three boys have been detained after initial investigation," the ASP noted.
Law enforcement officials are continuing their probe into the horrific crime to gather more evidence.
"Further investigation is on, and more details will be shared later," Baishya added.
