In a tragic incident, three siblings drowned in the Bhakra Canal near Mohali, Punjab, sparking outrage among villagers who blocked a major highway in protest. The victims, aged between 8 and 12 years, were reportedly playing near the canal when they slipped and fell into the water. Despite rescue efforts, their bodies were recovered later.
Villagers Block Highway
Following the incident, angry residents of the nearby village staged a protest on the highway, demanding strict action against those responsible. They alleged negligence and accused the authorities of failing to ensure safety measures along the canal. The blockade caused significant traffic disruption for several hours.
Police Action Sparks Controversy
In a controversial move, the police booked the grandparents of the deceased children instead of the parents. The villagers expressed outrage, arguing that the grandparents were not responsible for the children's safety at the time of the incident. They demanded that the parents be held accountable for negligence.
The police, however, defended their action, stating that the grandparents were the legal guardians as the parents were working elsewhere. The case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
Community Demands Safety Measures
The tragedy has reignited calls for better safety infrastructure along canals and water bodies in the region. Local leaders have urged the administration to install fencing and warning signs to prevent such incidents in the future. The village community has also demanded compensation for the bereaved family.
As the investigation continues, the police have assured that further action will be taken based on the findings. The highway blockade was lifted after assurances from authorities.
