Three women were arrested in Salem district on Wednesday night on charges of performing an illegal abortion. The incident came to light after a 25-year-old woman from Thalaivasal, who was four months pregnant, was admitted to a private hospital in Salem on Monday. She had undergone an illegal gender identification test followed by an abortion.
Investigation and Arrests
Salem district health department joint director Dr S Nandhini was informed about the case and conducted a thorough investigation. The woman's husband works as an agricultural labourer, and the couple already have two daughters. During the probe, it was revealed that three women from areas near Thalaivasal had performed the abortion.
Dr Nandhini stated, 'Investigations revealed that three women from areas near Thalaivasal had performed abortion.' Based on this, the Thalaivasal police arrested K Madhubala (47), V Bhuvaneswari (40), and S Gowri (38). They were subsequently remanded in judicial custody.
Details of the Accused
The arrested women are residents of the Thalaivasal region. Authorities are further investigating whether they were involved in similar illegal activities in the past. The case highlights the ongoing issue of illegal gender identification and abortion practices in the area.
