Tibetans in Himachal Pradesh Commemorate 67th Anniversary of Lhasa Uprising with Peace Marches

On Tuesday, Tibetan communities across Himachal Pradesh observed the 67th anniversary of the Lhasa uprising of 1959 by organizing peace marches in various locations. This solemn event coincided with the release of a strongly worded statement by the Tibetan government-in-exile, which accused China of inflicting "horrifying devastation in Tibet" over the decades.

Exile Government's Statement Details Allegations Against China

The statement from the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) presented a series of grave accusations. It claimed that more than two million Tibetans have suffered untimely deaths in the 77 years since China's invasion of Tibet in 1949. The document further asserted that the Chinese government has been relentless in its efforts to dismantle the religious, cultural, and linguistic heritage that defines Tibetan national identity.

"The Chinese Communist Party has forced countless numbers of Tibetan children to be removed from their parents and communities to be enrolled in boarding schools with a diabolical strategy to transform the Tibetan identity into a Chinese one," the statement declared, highlighting concerns over assimilation policies.

Historical Context and Unresolved Conflict

The Lhasa uprising on March 10, 1959, saw Tibetans staging a revolt against Chinese rule, which was subsequently suppressed by a military crackdown. The CTA's statement paid tribute to those killed during this event and criticized China for its unwavering hardline stance on the Sino-Tibetan conflict.

"Since 1979, the Central Tibetan Administration took a series of steps by which it made efforts to seek a solution to the Sino-Tibetan conflict by means of adopting a middle way policy. However, leaders of the People's Republic of China have refused to budge from their existing hardline policy, with the result that there were no positive developments in the situation," the statement explained, underscoring the ongoing diplomatic impasse.

Environmental Concerns and Infrastructure Projects

Beyond cultural issues, the statement also raised alarms about environmental degradation in Tibet. It accused the Chinese government of reckless infrastructure development and large-scale resource mining, which it claims have caused temperatures on the Tibetan Plateau to rise at three times the global average.

"The Medog hydropower project, launched last year, alongside other hydropower projects on major and mid-sized rivers, not only devastates the ecosystem of the Tibetan plateau, but continues to pose a direct threat to water security," the statement added, pointing to specific projects as examples of ecological harm.

Commemorative Events in Himachal Pradesh

To mark the anniversary, a commemorative event was held in Mcleodganj, Dharamshala, on Tuesday, reflecting the Tibetan diaspora's continued remembrance of their homeland's struggles. These peace marches and gatherings serve as a poignant reminder of the unresolved issues and the Tibetan community's resilience in exile.
