Intensive 16-Hour Rescue Operation at Tihar Jail Fails to Save Trapped Puppy
A dramatic and prolonged rescue mission unfolded at the Tihar Jail complex in New Delhi, lasting over sixteen hours, after a puppy fell into a deep borewell on Thursday. Despite the exhaustive efforts of multiple emergency response teams, the animal could not be saved and was found deceased at the scene.
Emergency Call and Initial Response
According to officials from the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), an emergency call was received at approximately 12:53 AM reporting a puppy trapped inside a borewell. Fire tenders were immediately dispatched to the location within the high-security prison premises. The alert was initially raised by personnel of the Tamil Nadu Special Police Force (TSP) who were deployed at the jail. They reported hearing distressed sounds emanating from the borewell, which confirmed the presence of the small animal.
Challenging Nighttime Rescue Efforts
DFS teams worked tirelessly through the night in an attempt to reach the puppy. The borewell was estimated to be between 120 and 150 feet deep, presenting significant technical challenges. To clear the shaft, responders had to first remove a submersible pump that was installed inside, along with its connected pipes. Subsequently, a waterproof camera was lowered nearly 100 feet into the narrow opening in an effort to locate the exact position of the trapped puppy.
NDRF Joins the Operation and Tragic Outcome
On Friday morning, specialized teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were called in to assist with the complex rescue operation. After extensive efforts, the puppy was eventually located. It was found trapped beneath a metal hook-like structure within the borewell. Tragically, officials confirmed that the animal had already died by the time it was reached. The body was successfully retrieved from the deep shaft, marking the end of the heartbreaking mission.
The incident highlights the risks associated with open borewells and the dedicated efforts of emergency services in responding to such challenging situations, even when involving animal rescues.
