Tirupati District Authorities Liberate 60 Workers from Bonded Labour Conditions
In a significant crackdown on forced labour practices, the district administration of Tirupati has successfully rescued 60 labourers from conditions of bondage across multiple locations in the region over recent days. This coordinated operation, which involved officials from several key departments, managed to secure the freedom of workers who were toiling under harsh circumstances in rural Tirupati.
Details of the Rescue Operation and Allegations Against Owners
The rescued individuals were migrant families hailing from Odisha, who had been employed at a brick kiln situated in Pudipatla village within Tirupati's rural areas for approximately five months. Reports indicate that each family received an advance payment of Rs 45,000 along with a weekly wage of Rs 1,000. However, their movement and employment opportunities were severely restricted, which are clear indicators of bonded labour as defined under Indian law.
Acting promptly on a referral, the district administration launched a comprehensive rescue mission spearheaded by the revenue department. This effort was bolstered by crucial support from the police and labour departments, ensuring a multi-faceted approach to addressing the situation.
Challenges Faced and Official Response
As the operation unfolded, brick kiln owners reportedly sensed impending trouble and attempted to relocate the workers away from the site in an effort to evade scrutiny. Officials, however, were prepared and effectively countered this move, successfully rescuing all 60 labourers from their oppressive conditions.
Tirupati Collector S Venkateshwar closely monitored the entire operation, taking personal responsibility to ensure that the rescued workers were immediately provided with essential necessities. This included access to food, safe shelter, and assurances of their ongoing safety and security.
Legal Actions and Rehabilitation Measures
In a decisive legal step, Collector Venkateshwar initiated a formal investigation under the provisions of the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act. Furthermore, release certificates were officially issued to all rescued workers, formally recognizing them as victims of bonded labour. This critical documentation will enable them to access comprehensive rehabilitation measures and support services designed to help them rebuild their lives.
Concurrently, a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against the brick kiln owners and their associates, paving the way for potential criminal proceedings and accountability for their alleged actions, which included coercive methods and assault as reported by the labourers.
