TMC asked to vacate Kolkata HQ after lease expiry

KOLKATA: The owner of a property off EM Bypass that houses the Trinamool Congress (TMC) headquarters has approached the Pragati Maidan police station, seeking assistance to reclaim his premises. Montu Saha, the owner of A/P-1/A Canal South Road, stated that the tenancy agreement with the TMC expired in late 2025. Despite repeated requests, the party has not vacated the building, prompting him to seek police intervention.

Owner's Efforts to Regain Property

On Sunday, Montu Saha and his son Amit visited the property to personally appeal to TMC members to relocate their office. However, no party functionaries were present at the time. After waiting for several hours, the father-son duo proceeded to the police station to lodge their complaint.

Amit Saha said, "After the contract lapsed late last year, we approached them several times, saying we want the building back. The structure needs repairs. We need it for business purposes. They told us they would vacate the building by July, but we want it back now. Lately, no one at the party has been available to communicate with us on this matter. We were left with no option but to approach the police."

Legal Recourse Considered

The Sahas indicated that they would pursue legal action to evict the TMC from the Canal South Road address, which has been known as Trinamool Bhawan since the party moved in three years ago. The property served as the coordination hub for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the upcoming 2026 assembly polls.

Before renting the property to the TMC in 2022, the Sahas operated a hotel named 'Arab Residency' from the premises.

Controversy Surrounding Original Headquarters

The party's original headquarters, also called Trinamool Bhawan, is embroiled in a separate controversy. Rebel party MLA Javed Khan has claimed that the land on which the original Trinamool Bhawan stands belongs to his family. "I have all the documents to prove that the Topsia Road plot is owned by my family," he asserted.

The TMC had shifted its headquarters to the Saha property to facilitate renovations at the original building.

TMC Functionary's Response

A TMC functionary dismissed the notion that the Saha family did any favour by renting out the property. "In return, he had bagged multiple contracts," the functionary said, implying a quid pro quo arrangement.
