Kolkata witnessed a major political development on Wednesday as Trinamool Congress spokesperson and state vice-president Jay Prakash Majumdar was arrested by the police. The arrest came on charges of harassing a woman and illegally occupying her house for several years, according to a police officer.
Complaint Details
The complainant, Arati Roychowdhury, alleged that Majumdar had initially moved into the property as a tenant approximately 12 years ago. However, she claimed that he later stopped paying rent and continued to occupy the house without her consent. The situation escalated as she alleged that the TMC leader refused to vacate the premises despite repeated requests and used his political influence to continue occupying the property.
According to the complaint, his actions effectively forced the rightful owner out of her own house. The police officer from Bidhannagar North Police Station confirmed the arrest, stating, "We have arrested him (Jay Prakash Majumdar)."
Public Reaction
As news of the arrest spread, several people gathered in the area and shouted: "chor, chor" (thief, thief). The incident has drawn significant attention, highlighting the ongoing issues of property disputes and political influence.
Political Context
There was no immediate response from the Trinamool Congress party. The development comes months after the party was defeated by the BJP in the Assembly elections held in April. This arrest adds to the political tensions in the state.
This case underscores the legal actions being taken against influential figures, and it remains to be seen how the party will respond to the allegations against one of its senior leaders.
