Arrested Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Jahangir Khan was taken to multiple locations in Falta on Friday in connection with the 2021 Bengal post-poll violence case. Khan, a close associate of TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, is currently in five-day police custody.
Investigation Details
According to police sources, Khan was escorted to several sites in the Falta area to reconstruct the sequence of events related to the alleged violence that occurred after the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections. The locations are believed to be key spots where incidents of arson, assault, and intimidation were reported.
Khan was arrested earlier this week by the West Bengal Police on charges of inciting violence and criminal conspiracy. He was produced before a local court, which remanded him to five days of police custody for further interrogation.
Political Reactions
The TMC has condemned the arrest, calling it a politically motivated move by the opposition. Party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, “Jahangir Khan is a dedicated party worker. This is an attempt to harass our leaders ahead of the upcoming elections.”
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) welcomed the development, demanding a thorough investigation into the post-poll violence that claimed several lives and led to widespread destruction of property.
The case is being monitored by the Calcutta High Court, which has directed the state police to submit a progress report within two weeks. The court has also asked for a fair and impartial probe.
Khan’s lawyer stated that they would seek bail once the police custody period ends, asserting that his client is innocent and being framed.
