Senior Tamil Nadu Police Commandant Remanded in Judicial Custody for Sexual Harassment
A senior police officer in Tamil Nadu has been remanded in judicial custody following serious allegations of sexual harassment against a woman police officer under his command. The incident, which occurred earlier this year, has led to swift departmental action and criminal proceedings.
Details of the Incident and Investigation
The accused officer has been identified as T Senthil Kumar, who served as commandant of the IVth battalion of the Tamil Nadu Special Police, stationed in Kovaipudur, Coimbatore. According to official sources, the alleged sexual harassment took place at Senthil Kumar's camp office during the second half of February this year.
The woman police officer reported the incident to her superiors on the same day it occurred, triggering an immediate departmental inquiry. The investigation thoroughly examined her allegations and concluded that the charges against Commandant Senthil Kumar were substantiated and true.
Administrative and Legal Actions Taken
Following the findings of the departmental inquiry, additional chief secretary Dheeraj Kumar took decisive administrative action. Senthil Kumar was placed under suspension under Rule 17(e) of the Tamil Nadu Civil Services (Discipline and Appeal) Rules, 1955, which governs disciplinary proceedings against civil servants in the state.
Concurrently, based on the formal complaint filed by the victim, the Coimbatore South all-woman police station registered a criminal case and launched a separate police investigation. This criminal investigation independently confirmed that Senthil Kumar had indeed sexually harassed the woman police officer, leading to his arrest.
Judicial Proceedings and Current Status
The arrested commandant was produced before a judicial magistrate court in Coimbatore, which remanded him to judicial custody on Saturday. Subsequently, T Senthil Kumar has been lodged at the Coimbatore Central Prison as legal proceedings continue.
This case highlights the mechanisms in place for addressing misconduct within police forces, demonstrating that even senior officers are subject to disciplinary and criminal accountability. The swift response from both departmental authorities and the all-woman police station underscores the seriousness with which such allegations are being treated in Tamil Nadu's law enforcement system.
