Tamil Nadu Police Incinerate Massive Ganja Haul in Tirunelveli
In a significant anti-narcotics operation, police authorities in Tamil Nadu conducted a major destruction of seized contraband on Tuesday. Approximately 1.2 tonnes of ganja, with an estimated street value of ₹1.5 crore, was incinerated at a private facility located in Pothaiyadi near Nanguneri within Tirunelveli district.
Court-Ordered Destruction Under Senior Supervision
The massive drug destruction operation was carried out following a formal court order. The process was conducted under the direct and vigilant supervision of senior police officials, including Deputy Inspector General of Police (Dindigul range) P Saminathan and Dindigul Superintendent of Police A Pradeep. This ensured proper protocol and transparency throughout the entire incineration procedure.
Contraband Seized from Hundreds of Cases
Police sources provided detailed breakdowns of the destroyed narcotics, revealing the extensive scope of the seizures. The incinerated ganja haul comprised:
- 896.48 kilograms seized from 198 separate cases registered in Dindigul district
- 333.32 kilograms confiscated from 92 different cases in neighboring Theni district
This cumulative total of 1,229.8 kilograms represents contraband linked to 290 individual narcotics cases across these two districts, demonstrating the widespread nature of the drug trade being targeted by law enforcement.
Interstate Smuggling and Enhanced Border Surveillance
Speaking to reporters at the destruction site, DIG P Saminathan provided crucial insights into the drug trafficking patterns affecting the region. He emphasized that Tamil Nadu does not have local cultivation of ganja, indicating that all such narcotics are being smuggled into the state from other regions.
In response to this interstate smuggling challenge, Saminathan confirmed that police departments have significantly intensified their surveillance operations and are maintaining close monitoring of interstate borders. These enhanced measures aim to systematically curb the influx of contraband substances into Tamil Nadu, disrupting supply chains and reducing availability.
The comprehensive destruction of this substantial drug haul represents a major victory in Tamil Nadu's ongoing battle against narcotics trafficking and underscores the commitment of law enforcement agencies to dismantle drug networks operating within the state.
