In a landmark verdict, the Trichy mahila court on Wednesday handed down a sentence of 14 years of rigorous imprisonment to an autorickshaw driver for the sexual assault of a homeless woman six years ago. The accused, identified as S Sathish Kumar, aged 42 and a resident of Viswas Nagar, Tharanallur, was found guilty of luring the victim with false promises of employment before committing the assault at knifepoint.

The survivor, a 23-year-old homeless woman suffering from mental illness, was residing near the Central Bus Stand in Trichy at the time of the incident. Observing that she was living alone and frequently wandering the area, Sathish Kumar, who was 36 years old then, deliberately befriended her. On January 15, 2020, he deceitfully took her to a secluded location near Viswas Nagar.
There, he sexually assaulted her while threatening her with a knife, causing severe physical harm before fleeing the scene. The woman, left bleeding from the assault, managed to seek assistance from passersby, who promptly alerted the authorities.
Police Investigation and Legal Proceedings
Following the rescue of the victim, the police acted swiftly based on her complaint. They identified Sathish Kumar as the perpetrator and arrested him. A formal case was registered at the Fort All Women Police Station, and a chargesheet was filed later that same year.
The trial spanned over five years, during which evidence was meticulously examined. Ultimately, the court found Sathish Kumar guilty of the charges brought against him.

Judge D Shanmuga Priya presided over the case and delivered the verdict on Wednesday. She sentenced Sathish Kumar to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment under IPC sections 376(2)(L) and 376(2)(M), which pertain to sexually assaulting a mentally challenged woman and causing bodily harm during the assault, respectively.
In addition, the judge imposed a 10-year sentence under section 367 for abduction, ordering that this sentence be served concurrently with the 14-year term. Furthermore, a fine of Rs 25,000 was levied on the convict.
