Trichy Police Crack Down on Illegal Liquor Trade with Major Seizures
In a significant enforcement action, the Trichy city police have successfully seized a substantial quantity of illegal liquor and made multiple arrests across the city. Over the course of a week-long operation, authorities confiscated approximately 55 litres of illicit alcohol, with an estimated market value of around ₹37,000. This crackdown highlights the ongoing efforts to curb the illegal sale of liquor in the region.
Week-Long Raids Lead to Multiple Arrests
The police conducted coordinated raids from March 18 to March 24, targeting various hotspots known for illegal liquor sales. During these operations, around 12 individuals were arrested for their involvement in the illicit trade. The accused were apprehended in locations spread throughout Trichy, including:
- Cantonment
- EB Road
- Edamalaipatti Pudur
- Kooni Bazaar
- Puthur
- Anna Statue
- Azhagiripuram
- Ponmalai
Following their arrest, the individuals were produced before magistrates and subsequently remanded to judicial custody, pending further legal proceedings.
Detailed Seizures and Police Actions
The enforcement drive resulted in the seizure of about 279 liquor bottles, containing a total of 55 litres of illegal alcohol. Among the notable confiscations, on March 20, police seized approximately 57 bottles, measuring around 10.2 litres and valued at over ₹8,000, from a location near Ramji Nagar in Edamalaipatti Pudur. In another major operation on March 22, authorities confiscated about 81 bottles, totaling 19.7 litres with a value exceeding ₹11,560, during raids conducted at four different sites.
The Trichy city police's Prohibition and Enforcement Wing (PEW) registered several cases in connection with these incidents. Additionally, police stations such as Golden Rock, Palakkarai, Fort, and Srirangam were involved in booking the accused under relevant legal provisions.
This comprehensive action underscores the police's commitment to enforcing liquor laws and maintaining public order in Trichy. The seizures and arrests are expected to disrupt the illegal liquor network and serve as a deterrent to others involved in similar activities.
