Howrah: Bamungachi in Liluah turned into a battlefield on Sunday as Trinamool Congress and BJP supporters clashed, prompting the Election Commission to order the transfer of two Howrah police inspectors.
The violence broke out when a Trinamool procession passed close to a BJP roadshow attended by actor Ravi Kishan. Eleven people were injured, and police detained seven individuals from both sides. Trinamool Congress alleged that BJP workers attacked first, a claim denied by the BJP. The procession was initially dispersed but later regrouped, leading to clashes with sticks, bamboo, and iron rods. Police and central forces resorted to lathicharge to restore order.
In response to the incident, the Election Commission directed the transfer of two police inspectors from Howrah, citing a failure to maintain law and order. The situation is now under control, with additional security forces deployed in the area.
