Truck crashes into crowd at Chennai signal, one dead

A tragic accident occurred near Maraimalai Nagar on Wednesday when a truck driver lost control of his vehicle and ploughed into people waiting at a traffic signal, resulting in one fatality and two injuries.

Details of the Incident

The truck, which was carrying heavy iron centering plates, was traveling at high speed from Chennai towards Trichy. According to police, the driver failed to notice the traffic signal and applied the brakes suddenly. This caused the vehicle to go out of control, crash into the people at the junction, and overturn.

Impact and Casualties

The iron centering plates fell onto the victims upon impact. Vaithiyalingam, a 52-year-old resident of Thirukazhukundram, was crushed under the plates and died on the spot. Two other individuals sustained serious injuries and were rescued by bystanders.

Police Action

The Tambaram traffic investigation wing police recovered the body and sent it to Chengalpet Government Hospital for postmortem examination. The truck driver, identified as Sakthivel, has been arrested in connection with the accident.
