Truck Driver from Rajasthan Allegedly Extorted in Kolkata Over Stray Dog Incident
A truck driver from Rajasthan was allegedly subjected to threats and extortion by a local family and their associates in Kolkata's Bansdroni area on Tuesday. The incident reportedly occurred after the driver's vehicle was accused of running over a stray dog.
Details of the Alleged Extortion
According to the complaint filed by the driver, Raju Kathat (43), he had just finished loading cargo and was preparing to depart around 11 am when he was intercepted by a local youth. The youth claimed that Kathat's truck had run over a dog in the area.
The situation quickly escalated as elder family members and neighbors joined the youth. Kathat stated that they threatened him with severe violence, including disfigurement with acid, if he did not pay up immediately. Under duress, Kathat was coerced into a so-called "settlement" of Rs 25,000 for the alleged death of the animal.
