Truck Carrying Electrical Cables Overturns on Kerala Ring Road
A serious road accident occurred in the early hours of Friday when a truck registered in Rajasthan overturned while navigating a challenging steep section of the Pirappancode–Ambalammukku ring road in Thiruvananthapuram. The incident, which took place shortly after midnight, resulted in extensive damage to a nearby residential property and multiple vehicles.
Extensive Property Damage Reported
The truck was transporting large bundles of electrical cables that were wound on substantial wooden spool wheels. When the vehicle overturned, these heavy cable reels were violently thrown from the truck. They struck a house owned by Purushottaman Pillai with significant force, causing the front portion of the structure and a section of the wall to collapse completely.
Additional vehicle damage was also reported as a car and a motorcycle parked on the premises were crushed under the falling debris and cable spools. Remarkably, Shushila Amma, Pillai's wife who was inside the house at the time of the accident, managed to escape without any injuries despite the substantial structural damage to her home.
Driver Injured and Hospitalized
The truck driver, identified as 27-year-old Dileep, sustained injuries in the accident and is currently undergoing medical treatment at a private hospital. Police sources investigating the incident have indicated that brake failure may have been a contributing factor as Dileep attempted to navigate the truck up the particularly steep section of the ring road.
Emergency Response and Investigation
A fireforce team from Venjaramoodu promptly responded to the accident scene. Their crew worked efficiently to clear the spilled cables and debris from the roadway, allowing traffic to be restored in the area. The Venjaramoodu police have officially registered a case regarding the incident and have initiated a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact circumstances and causes of the accident.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about road safety on challenging terrain, particularly for heavy commercial vehicles transporting substantial loads. The investigation will likely examine vehicle maintenance records, road conditions, and driver factors as authorities work to prevent similar accidents in the future.
